Ameland: The Diamond of the Wadden Sea

Ameland, often called the "Diamond of the Wadden Sea", is a peaceful Dutch island where history and nature are as intertwined as the tides. Whether you are looking for a peaceful retreat or an active holiday, this island offers a unique Frisian charm.

A glimpse into history

Ameland has a strong sense of independence. The island was first mentioned in the 8th century as Ambla, and spent centuries as a "Freedom" (Vrijheerschap), independent of both Holland and Friesland until 1708. This autonomous spirit is still visible in the "Commander's Houses" in Hollum and Nes, built by wealthy whaling captains during the island's golden age. Today it is part of the Netherlands, but the feeling of being "separate from the world" remains.

Description of the island

Ameland is a place where you can truly relax and recharge. The landscape is a mosaic of wide sandy beaches, rolling dunes and picturesque villages. It feels like a perpetual holiday destination; the air is salty, the pace is slow, and the four main villages – Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren – each offer a picturesque backdrop of brick houses and hidden courtyards. It is the perfect place for a sightseeing tour or a quiet stay by the sea.

Gastronomy and local specialties

Typical foods

Nobeltje: The island's most famous export. It is a sweet liqueur made from a secret recipe, created by the Nobel family in Ballum.

Ameland mustard soup: A creamy, rich soup that often contains local mustard seeds and island-grown leeks.

Ameland lamb: Known for its tender, slightly salty taste due to the sheep grazing on the salt marsh landscapes.

Ameland sugar bread: A decadent, sticky sweet bread (suikerbrood) that is a staple of every breakfast on the island.

Sea buckthorn products: In the fall, the orange berries of the sea buckthorn are harvested to make vitamin-rich syrups, jams and juices.
